Zeni and Digits are two of the most compelling artificial intelligence (AI) powered accounting solutions available in 2026. However, they have distinct features and capabilities that can make them attractive to very different types of users.

Zeni is a more comprehensive solution that offers a mix of financial operations software and services. Meanwhile, Digits is narrower, functioning as an automated replacement for traditional general ledger software.

In this review, we’ll compare Zeni vs. Digits across key areas like their AI tools, the month-end close, bill pay, customer support options, and pricing to help you determine which makes the most sense for your business.

AI Features

Zeni and Digits have significant overlap in their basic AI automation features. Fundamentally, they both use the technology to automate transaction categorization and streamline the month-end close, effectively providing real-time bookkeeping 24/7.

In addition, both platforms include an AI-powered dashboard that translates raw financial data into more readily digestible insights, tracking trends in areas like:

  • Key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Cash flow and net burn rate
  • Top customer and vendor activities

Zeni and Digits also offer similar AI bill pay and accounts payable tools, which can automatically extract details from incoming invoices, forward bills through approval chains, and process payment via ACH for free.

However, this is where the products start to diverge beyond cosmetic and user interface differences. The biggest structural difference is where the books live.

Digits is a dedicated general ledger that replaces legacy software. Zeni works on top of the ledger you already trust, QuickBooks Online (QBO) or NetSuite, reading from and writing back to it in real time. That means you don’t have to migrate your books or retrain your team to get AI-driven accounting.

Zeni also covers more of the finance workflow in one place. Alongside AI bookkeeping and bill pay, it includes AI employee reimbursements and AI invoicing, so both accounts payable and accounts receivable run through the same platform.

How Zeni’s AI learns your books

Accuracy in AI bookkeeping depends on context. Zeni’s AI looks at your company’s own history first, so categorization follows the way your books have always been kept, then draws on patterns learned across hundreds of businesses to fill in the gaps.

It’s also built with guardrails that finance teams care about:

  • Closed periods stay closed. The AI won’t make changes to periods you’ve already closed.
  • Human decisions are respected. Transactions that were already reviewed and approved, such as bills and reimbursements that went through an approval workflow, aren’t second-guessed by the AI.
  • A clean audit trail. Every transaction carries a change history, so you can see what changed, when, and why.

AI Accountant and AI CFO: looking back and looking forward

The other key distinction has to do with each platform’s built-in chatbots. Digits offers a tool it calls Ask Digits, an AI agent you can use to ask a question about historical financial data or initiate a basic financial task, like running reports or reconciliations.

While Zeni provides those same capabilities through its AI Accountant, it can also handle forward-looking work through its AI CFO. For example, that includes support for what-if analysis and scenario modeling, enhancing strategic planning. With AI CFO, you can:

  • Get instant answers on burn, runway, margins, revenue trends, and vendor spend
  • Run built-in skills, like a flux analysis or a cash forecast, by typing “/”
  • Upload a document and ask questions about it
  • Click “Show Reason” to see exactly how an answer was calculated
  • Export answers straight to Excel

Zeni’s Forecast view adds versioned budgets that you can compare against actual results, period by period.

The Month-End Close

Both platforms promise a faster close, but Zeni makes the entire process visible. Its AI Accountant runs the close as five tracked steps, with a Confidence Score that shows how close your books are to done:

  • Transactions: The AI suggests a category for each transaction, which you can accept in one click. You can also split a single payment across multiple categories and classes.
  • Journal entries: The AI proposes prepaid, fixed-asset, and accrual schedules, complete with every future posting and running balance. A capitalization threshold you set decides what gets scheduled automatically, and accruals reverse on their own when the real bill arrives.
  • Receipts: Forward receipts to your Zeni receipts email and they’re matched to transactions automatically.
  • Flux analysis: Review month-over-month variances by vendor, category, and class, then mark them reviewed.
  • Reconciliations: Reconcile bank accounts through a direct Plaid connection or by uploading a statement for any date range. Zeni shows the statement balance next to the calculated balance so mismatches stand out.

Once your Confidence Score reaches 75%, you can generate month-end insights with a single click. A built-in Task Checklist keeps the rest of the close on track, with owners, due dates, recurring tasks, and alerts via Slack and email.

Bill Pay and Reimbursements

Free ACH is table stakes. Zeni goes further on the payment side, with free standard and same-day ACH, free domestic wires, international wires, and payment by check.

When you upload a vendor bill, Zeni’s AI reads it, matches it to an existing vendor (or creates a new one), flags duplicates, codes each line item to the right GL account, and schedules payment based on the invoice’s terms. Approval rules can include multiple steps and dollar thresholds, and approvers can be specific people or the vendor’s owner.

Employee reimbursements follow the same approval flow and are paid by same-day ACH at no cost. Zeni also keeps your vendor list clean, merging duplicate vendors, suggesting category and owner fixes, and tracking spend over the last 30 days, 90 days, and year to date, with 1099 tracking built in.

Everything syncs to QuickBooks Online or NetSuite with accurate GL entries for both the bill and its payment.

One Dashboard for All Your Finances

Because Zeni isn’t a ledger replacement, it’s built to pull your whole finance stack into a single view. Beyond QuickBooks Online and NetSuite, Zeni connects to your banks and cards through Plaid, plus Stripe, PayPal, Mercury, Chargebee, HubSpot, your payroll provider, and Gmail. Payroll journals flow into your books automatically after a one-time account mapping.

Zeni also offers built-in business checking and treasury accounts, with automatic transfer rules that move cash between accounts, so banking, bill pay, and bookkeeping share the same data from day one.

Services

Likely the most substantial difference between Zeni and Digits is the fact that Digits is a purely product-driven platform. Customers get access to Digits’s AI-powered software, but no additional financial services are available.

In contrast, Zeni is designed to be a more comprehensive solution that provides everything you need to manage your finances in one place. Beyond our AI software, this includes a suite of outsourced financial services:

  • Fractional CFO: Get CFO-level guidance with complex challenges like financial modeling, venture capital fundraising, and board meeting prep.
  • Tax accounting: Let a team of expert tax advisors handle strategic tax planning and compliance, as well as your tax return and other filings.
  • Payroll management: Outsource employee onboarding, termination, and payroll system management to a team of dedicated specialists.

Each of these services integrates with our Zeni AI bookkeeping software but is available separately and on a monthly basis. This allows you to receive tailored support that meets your unique needs—and to make adjustments as those needs change.

In addition, both the fractional CFO and tax services include multiple tiers designed for various levels of complexity. As a result, rapidly growing companies can opt for the level of assistance that matches their current scale.

Onboarding and Support

Zeni and Digits differ meaningfully in the type of support they offer customers. Much of this is due to the fact that Digits is a software product, while Zeni offers a more holistic combination of software, services, and expert support.

Digits’s primary means of customer assistance is its extensive help center. It contains step-by-step guides for common business and accountant user situations, as well as a dedicated changelog that updates for product revisions as they go live.

If you need help beyond what you can find in Digits’s resources, you can contact their support team by sending them an email. However, there’s no phone number to call for additional help and no clear option to schedule a live conversation.

Zeni’s support starts before you’re even a full customer. New customers get a self-onboarding link to connect their accounting system and activate the Zeni dashboard before the kickoff call.

That kickoff is a 60-minute session where you meet your dedicated Controller, your main point of contact going forward, and get your team set up and trained on the platform.

In addition to our own help center, Zeni has a public phone number you can call to get in touch with a real representative. Customers also have the option to request a call with Zeni’s Finance Concierge, its dedicated team of finance experts, at any time via email.

If your support needs don’t rise to the level of a phone call, email is also the main point of contact for other questions or requests. Zeni’s Concierge is staffed Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM PST and aims to answer emails within two hours.

Pricing

Due to its modular nature, Zeni pricing depends on which products and services you need. For example, AI bookkeeping starts at $549 per month for pre-revenue startups and $799 for more established businesses, with a 10% discount for annual billing.

Meanwhile, our fractional CFO services range from $1,599 per month plus a $2,000 startup fee to $4,990 per month plus a $6,000 setup fee, depending on the type of assistance and number of hours you need each period.

Similarly, Zeni’s tax services start at $2,499 per year for pre-revenue companies or $3,899 per year for those with up to $500K in revenue, and its payroll management services are a flat $199 per month. Pricing for Zeni’s AI Accountant and AI CFO is similarly competitive, and Zeni Bill Pay and Reimbursements carry no platform or ACH fees.

Digits splits its plans between those for individual businesses and those for accounting firms. For the former, there are three simple tiers to choose from:

  • Essentials: $65 per month for solopreneurs and early-stage businesses
  • Core: $100 per month for small business owners and growing companies
  • Pro: $250 per month for scaling businesses with internal finance teams

On top of the Essentials features, the Core tier adds support for custom dashboards and accounting for individual departments and locations. Meanwhile, the Pro plan adds auto-updated schedules, the agentic close, and custom financial reporting for investors.

For accountants, Digits offers similar tiers mapped to a per-client, per-month structure. These range from $35 to $250 for practices with up to 50 clients and from $50 to $250 for those with 50+ clients. For those with 500+ clients, custom pricing is available.

Best For

Digits is generally best for solopreneurs and small businesses interested in an AI-native alternative to legacy general ledger software. Its pricing is comparable to something like QBO Plus, but it was built around AI rather than tacking on AI tools after the fact.

As a result, Digits treats the quality and refinement of its AI model as a primary differentiator, with a dedicated machine learning team in-house and an ongoing partnership with both NVIDIA and Google.

Meanwhile, Zeni is generally the superior option for small and mid-market companies looking for a more comprehensive solution, especially those that want to keep QuickBooks Online or NetSuite as their ledger and are interested in hands-on support from human experts.

In addition to providing every client access to a dedicated finance team, Zeni offers a transparent, step-by-step AI close, built-in bill pay, reimbursements, invoicing, and banking, and integrated fractional CFO, tax accounting, and payroll management services, going well beyond a simple software subscription.

Zeni’s tool is also used by accountants and CPA firms looking to automate the client busywork without sacrificing quality. Firms can switch between client companies in a single login, control access with user roles, and assign recurring close tasks across their team.

We also have a long history of serving and coming up through the startup space, giving our teams and CEO, co-founder Swapnil Shinde, a deep understanding of the nuances around startup-specific challenges, like Series A and Series B fundraising.
